Seattle University and Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce Kick Off Halloween with Neighborhood Service Project
Halloween celebrations began early for Seattle University and the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce this morning with a spooky-themed “Monster Street Sweep” on Capitol Hill. More than 100 Seattle University faculty, students and staff, and neighbors, business owners and members of community organizations – many in costume – spread across the neighborhood just north of the university campus to scare up trash and provide a clean area for the evening’s trick-or-treaters.
“This clean-up brings together the university and our neighbors to celebrate and improve our neighborhood and have a howling good time,” said Timothy Leary, Seattle University executive vice president. “This is another great way we are building valuable partnerships with our community.”
Volunteers picked up trash in the blocks from Broadway to 12th Avenue, and Pine to Madison. The street sweep is a twice yearly event led by the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, of which Seattle University is a Cornerstone Member. Saturday’s event highlights the university’s ongoing partnership with the Chamber and more than 60 other community groups. Seattle University is a recognized leader in sustainable practices and community service – more than three out of four students serve the community as part of their studies, a rate nearly three times the national average.
Support and donations were also provided by Bon Appétit, BECU, Capitol Hill Housing, Bluebird Homemade Ice Cream & Tea Room, ZipCar and Sound Transit.
